Two hundred consumptives a year came up the mountain for the air. Roughly one in six never left the building alive.

High on the Kroppefjäll plateau above Dals Rostock, a tuberculosis sanatorium was inaugurated on 12 April 1911. The altitude and the dry pine-forest air were the whole treatment: rest cures on the balconies all year round, silence, hours of staring out over the forests of Dalsland. From fifty-one beds the institution grew to eighty-one in 1913 and a hundred and twenty in the 1920s, taking in around two hundred patients a year for long stays. About sixteen per cent of them died during treatment. As tuberculosis receded the wards emptied; in 1959 the county council decided on closure and the last patient left in May 1960. Since then the building has been a care home, a refugee facility, a hostel, a tourist centre, a spa and a hotel. The balconies where the deck chairs stood are still there, row upon row.
