The hotel was originally built as an exclusive summer residence for the snuff manufacturer Erik Swartz, and has passed through several changes since. During the 1900s it was lived in by his son Carl Swartz, who for a brief period in 1917 was Prime Minister of Sweden. In the 1950s the house was converted into a hotel, and the reputation of the place for paranormal activity has only grown stronger since.

A hotel where time seems to have stopped

Stenkullen Inn stands right beside the E4 motorway, but despite that modern setting, passing through its gates feels like stepping into another age. The exterior, inspired by Italian architecture with its white plastered façades, balustrades and arches, gives an impression of elegance — but also of something indefinable, something that raises the hairs on your skin.

Inside, the building offers antique furniture, oil paintings and an atmosphere steeped in history. Newspaper clippings from bygone days hang on the walls, and the guest rooms are furnished with historic king and queen beds. King Oscar II's specially built bed is still there, and some guests have claimed to feel a presence in the room — as though someone unseen still sleeps in it.

Stenkullen has been in the Svensson family since 1957. Today the hotel is run by Maria Svensson, who grew up in the house and took over after her parents died. She lives alone in the large building and manages everything herself — though according to many, she is far from alone at night.

Maria's father, Niels, was a medium and held séances in the house as early as the 1960s. He was convinced a strong spiritual presence inhabited the building, and believed a restless spirit tried to drive the family out when they first moved in. Doors slammed, furniture moved, and strange sounds came from empty rooms.

Many describe a tall, dark-clad figure seen standing at the foot of the bed or moving along the corridors. Others have felt cold draughts with every window shut, and some have woken to the sense that someone unseen is standing and watching them in the dark.

The dark figure. Several guests report waking in the middle of the night with the feeling of being watched. Opening their eyes, they have seen a shadow figure at the foot of the bed — which then vanishes without trace.

Doors that open and close on their own. Staff describe doors pulled open by invisible hands, and lamps switching on and off for no reason.

Footsteps and whispering. Heavy steps are often heard in the corridors at night, and several guests have heard faint whispers right beside their ear.
