After Dickson's death in 1885 the villa was put to various uses. For much of the 1900s it served as the Methodist church's theological seminary, and later took on other functions, but its elegant exterior remains a reminder of its grand past.

Villa Överås is known for more than its history and architecture. Many describe strange phenomena here: shadows, unexplained sounds and an uncomfortable presence in certain parts of the house.

One of the best-known accounts concerns a Finnish clergyman who spent a night alone in the villa. During the night he is said to have seen a woman in a black dress and veil who suddenly appeared in the room through one of the large windows. The clergyman left immediately and never returned.

Other stories centre on a Danish woman said to have taken her own life in the attic after being accused of a terrible crime. She has been given the nickname the Girl in the Attic, and many who have spent time in the villa say they have heard her footsteps or seen door handles move as though someone were trying to get out.

Most talked about, however, is the Lady in Black. She is sometimes said to stand still and observe visitors before vanishing as quickly as she appeared. Many who have encountered her describe an icy cold that accompanies her presence.
