The White Lady, the farmhands – and someone who scratches and wants out of the wall. In the winter of 1820 the works also met a real terror that could not be walled in.

Gysinge was founded in 1668 and became one of Sweden's leading ironworks in the 1800s. The present manor was begun in 1832 by the works owner Michael Benedicks and completed in 1851, six years after his death. The house stood empty for long periods in the twentieth century and was slated for demolition in 1969. The stories gathered on the estate concern the White Lady, farmhands who appear, and someone who scratches and wants out of the wall – a walling-up belief tied to one particular wall. The estate also states that a murder was committed here. To this is added a documented terror: between New Year's Eve 1820 and the end of March 1821 a single wolf attacked thirty-one people in the district around the works, most of them children, and nine died. The wolf was shot at Årsunda in April 1821. It remains the worst recorded wolf attack in Swedish history.
