A tree grew from the vampire's staked grave, and visitors still leave toys for Nachito, the boy who died of his fear of the dark.

Guadalajara's monumental cemetery, opened in 1848, is packed with legends and hosts nightly ghost tours. Most famous is the vampire's grave: in the 19th century a blood-draining creature was allegedly hunted down by a mob who drove a wooden stake through his heart, and from that stake grew the tree that now cracks the tombstone. Here also lies Nachito, a boy so afraid of the dark that, as the story goes, he died of terror one night when the candles blew out; his grave is permanently covered with toys and sweets left by visitors. Guards and guests report children's voices, shadows among the crypts and a monk pacing the colonnades.
