The orphanage's clock of death stopped each time a child died - and at night children's laughter is still said to echo through the arcades.

Hospicio Cabañas in Guadalajara, built in the 19th century as an orphanage and hospice, is today a World Heritage museum housing Orozco's famous murals. Its best-known legend is the 'clock of death': the great clock on the facade stopped again and again with no technical fault, and each stoppage was said to coincide with the death of one of the orphans. One version claims an employee drowned several children in a nearby pond, laying a curse on the clock, which was finally removed in 1952. Neighbours and night guards still speak of children's laughter, running footsteps on the stairs and small shadows in the long arcades.
