This colonial stone bridge in Puebla carries a tragic love legend. María del Rosario, daughter of the powerful Ovando family, secretly loved a mestizo man although her father had promised her to another; when her brother caught the couple he fired at the lover, but María threw herself between them and died. The brother walked free in the name of family honour, and the father drank himself into grief. One night at the bridge he met a beggar woman whose voice he recognized as his dead daughter's - panicking, he fell into the river and was swept away. Ever since, whoever crosses the bridge at midnight is said to meet a woman stretching out her hand for alms.
