Set in the Östergötland countryside just outside Norrköping, Löfstad Castle stands as a living monument to Swedish history and to the vanished days of the aristocracy. Built between 1630 and 1660, it has had prominent owners over the years: the field marshal Count Axel Lillie and his wife Christina Mörner, and later Sophie von Fersen, sister of the tragically murdered Axel von Fersen the Younger. With its grand salons and carefully preserved interiors, stepping into Löfstad feels like stepping out of time.

Ghosts that never left

Löfstad is not only a historic landmark — it is also home to several restless spirits, if the many accounts passed down over the years are to be believed. The best known is the Grey Lady, said to appear when death is about to strike someone nearby. Many hold that this sorrowful figure is Sophie von Fersen herself, walking the corridors in endless grief for her beloved brother, or perhaps for her youthful love, Duke Fredrik Adolf.

Besides the Grey Lady, the echoing footsteps of an old soldier with a wooden leg are said to patrol the great halls at night. What makes his presence distinctive is the heavy thud as the wooden leg strikes the floor — a reminder of the war he once fought in, and which seems to pursue him even in death.

Tragic fates

Another spirit is said to be a maid who accidentally started a devastating fire at the castle in 1750. According to legend she was so overcome by what had happened that she threw herself from the castle's high cliffs into the cold waters of Lake Löfstad. Those who stay after dark can sometimes see her shadow running from the castle before disappearing into the depths of the lake.

About Axel von Fersen

Axel von Fersen the Younger (1755–1810) was a Swedish count, soldier and diplomat, best known for his close relationship with Marie Antoinette, Queen of France during the French Revolution. His kinship with Sweden's most powerful families and his personal charm made him an influential figure at the European courts, and he was among Gustav III's closest confidants.

During the American Revolution, Fersen served as an officer in the French army and fought alongside George Washington. But it was his strong bond with Marie Antoinette that came to define his life. Rumours of a romance between them remain disputed, but Fersen was deeply committed to the safety of the queen and the royal family. He attempted to save them from the violence of the revolution through the notorious flight to Varennes, which ended in disaster.

After the revolution Fersen returned to Sweden, where he became Marshal of the Realm. His life ended tragically: in 1810 he was beaten to death by an enraged crowd in Stockholm, having been suspected of involvement in the mysterious death of Crown Prince Karl August. The drama of his life and death has given rise to many myths, and his story still fascinates.
