Children's cries from the attic

One of the most persistent and unsettling accounts from Övralid concerns sounds from the attic. Visitors and staff have on several occasions heard distinct cries of a child that seem to come from the top floor. The attic, a cold and solitary space in itself, is otherwise silent and empty, but some believe the sound may be an echo of something tragic that happened in an earlier time. No one knows for certain where the sounds come from, but they are part of Övralid's atmosphere — and a reminder that there is always more beneath the surface of a historic house.

The poet's apparition

Verner von Heidenstam, one of Sweden's most loved writers and poets, died in his home at Övralid on 20 May 1940. Many have since described his spirit lingering there.

Witnesses describe an elderly man with a pale face and a calm expression walking through the library and the study. Sometimes he is seen standing at one of the windows, his gaze turned towards Vättern, as if still drawing inspiration from the views that once filled his work with life.

Staff have also described a strange presence, particularly in the library. Books appear to move on their own, and doors that were closed a moment earlier stand ajar. "It feels as though he never really left," says one guide, who has herself felt watched while telling visitors about Heidenstam's life.
