The local press christened La Sabinosa the cursed building of Tarragona, and urban explorers and parapsychology groups who have got inside report recorded voices, shadows and an oppressive sense of presence in the long corridors. The morgue still stands untouched.

What gave the building its reputation, though, is not the ghosts but the testimony. The preventorium on the shore outside Tarragona opened in 1932, served as a blood hospital during the civil war and in 1946 became an institution where children at risk of tuberculosis were held in isolation until 1967. Accounts from former inmates, made public in 2012, describe beatings, children forced to eat their own vomit and letters home that were censored. Since 1976 its 77,000 square metres have stood abandoned.
