A book chained to the table, two men reading it by night — and flames rising straight out of the pages until an entire wing was gone.

Sæbygaard was built as a pleasure residence for Stygge Krumpen, the last Catholic bishop of Børglum, and the house has carried his shadow ever since. Its strangest legend concerns a wing that no longer exists: a book is said to have lain chained to a table there, and one night two men sat down to read it. Flames shot up out of the pages, the room caught fire and the whole wing burned to the ground. What remains is the green room, which older locals held to be haunted and preferred not to enter. The haunting is usually attributed to Karen Skeel, who died in 1601, wife of admiral Peder Munk, owner of Sæbygaard for over thirty years. Their marriage stayed childless — enough for neighbours to whisper that she was a witch.
