Denmark's richest haunted castle: three phantom carriages, a cursed portrait that harms all who touch it, a battered wife and a wicked mademoiselle.

Visborggaard Castle by Mariagerfjord is one of Denmark's most densely haunted houses. Mrs. Magdalene Kjellerup (owner 1891–1912) daily warded off invisible hands from her shoulder. Colonel Andreas Arenstorff abused his wife Sophia Schiebell and kept her imprisoned — she plunged from a tower window. Mademoiselle Susanna Blambois died dumb, blind and deaf in childbed and terrorized the house every evening at eleven, until priests drove her out to the Red Gate.

It is, however, the portrait of Claus Seefled from 1671 that is most dangerous. Everyone who has touched it has suffered — falls down stairs, broken bones, disability. Three different phantom carriages with coal-black horses still drive across the courtyard at night, including a six-horse team with headless horses. The staff do not touch the portrait — not even when it must be moved.
