The king had her carried out through a window and married her that same evening — she returned here as dowager queen, and is said to return still.

In 1711 the eighteen-year-old Countess Anna Sophie Reventlow attended a masquerade at Koldinghus when King Frederik IV saw her. A year later he had her abducted from Clausholm: servants helped her out through a window, a carriage waited in the park, and that same evening she was married to the king with the left hand in Skanderborg castle chapel. When Queen Louise died in 1721 he married her with the right hand and had her crowned. After the king's death in 1730, Christian VI banished her back to Clausholm, where she lived confined with a large household until she died. Legend says she never left: at night Anna Sophie is still said to walk the rooms of the castle, back inside the house she once fled.
