Clement Studebaker's mansion in South Bend, later a home for deaf children and now a restaurant. A fire in the nursery badly burned a nanny and a child.

Tippecanoe Place in South Bend, Indiana was the home of Clement Studebaker, one of the brothers behind the Studebaker company. Since the family left it has been a home for deaf children and is now a restaurant.

Two incidents are attached to it.

The first is a fire in the nursery in the early 1900s, in which a nanny and a child were severely burned.

The second concerns Studebaker himself. Local account holds that he took his own life as the family empire came apart. Whether it happened, and if so whether it happened in this house, is disputed even by the people who tell the story, and it should not be repeated as established fact about a named historical figure.

The mansion is enormous, built to display what the carriage and motor trade had made, and it has been open to the public in one form or another for most of a century. The reports come from staff working the restaurant and from diners, and the nursery is the part of the building they concentrate on.
