Before any of it, the Potawatomi lived along these lakes. They were forced out of Indiana in 1838 on what is remembered as the Trail of Death, a removal march to Kansas on which a great many of them, particularly the children, died. The land the university stands on is theirs, and that is the first thing on this page rather than a footnote to it.
