Stone Pile Gap

A heap of stones in the middle of a Georgia crossroads, said to be the grave of Trahlyta. Travellers have added a stone each for well over a century.

At the junction of US 19 and State Route 60 just north of Dahlonega, Georgia, there is a large pile of stones sitting in the middle of the intersection.

It is said to be the grave of Trahlyta, described in every telling as a Cherokee princess. She is said to have sought out the Witch of Cedar Mountain to keep her youth and beauty, and to have been sent to a medicine spring.

The princess is the part to be sceptical about. Cherokee society had no princesses, and the story in its current form was shaped by white writers in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Whoever is buried under those stones, the tale told about them is not theirs.

What is real and continuous is the practice. Travellers passing the gap add a stone, and have done for well over a century, which is why the pile is the size it is.
