The Pythian Home at Lafayette, Indiana was a care home, and a great many of the people who lived there died there.

What is reported is unspectacular and consistent: lights turning on unexpectedly, footsteps, and the sensation of something brushing past you.

Several stories circulate about deaths in the building. None is documented and they are not repeated here.

The Knights of Pythias, like the Odd Fellows and the Masons, ran homes of this kind across the United States for the widows, orphans and elderly members of the order. Before public pensions and social security, a fraternal lodge was for many working men the only insurance there was, and these buildings are what that system left behind.

Most of them are gone now, converted or demolished, because the need they answered was taken over by the state.
