The story goes back to the 1960s or 1970s, possibly earlier. There was a couch out on the road, halfway along, used by couples. One night something happened there.

Goatman legends turn up across the United States, in Maryland, Texas, Kentucky and here, and they share a structure: an isolated lovers' lane, a half human figure, and a couple in a car. The similarity across states that had no contact is the interesting part.
