The Octagon House at Fond du Lac, Wisconsin has hidden passages built into it, and the house has long been said to have sheltered people escaping slavery.

Visitors report talking, crying, faint shouting, and scratching from inside the walls. One such report is said to have led to the discovery of a concealed space nobody knew was there.

A note of caution belongs with this. Underground Railroad claims are attached to a great many northern houses with unusual cellars or passages, and historians who examine them find that most of the passages were built for storage, ice or drainage. Wisconsin was strongly abolitionist and did shelter fugitives, sometimes in open defiance of federal marshals, so the history is real even where a particular house's claim is not.

Octagonal houses were a brief American craze of the 1850s, promoted as healthier and more efficient than square ones.

The house is a museum and is open to visitors.
