High on the Brunkeberg ridge in Stockholm stands St John's Church, an imposing red-brick building looking out over Norrmalm. But it is not the church's handsome façade that gave the place its reputation. It is what is said to happen in the churchyard after dark.

Here, among the headstones and shadowed paths, the dead are said to be more present than the living. Witnesses have reported whispers from the earth, black figures moving in jerking motions, and an unexplained, penetrating smell of decay.

Whispers from the nameless grave

At one corner of the churchyard wall lies an anonymous stone. No one knows exactly who rests there, but according to legend anyone who puts an ear to the ground can hear faint voices rising to a scream before dying away into silence.

It has been said that bodies were once thrown over the wall at night, that black masses were held among the graves, and that a shapeless creature rose from the earth. The accounts are old, but the rumours persist — and even today few dare test whether the whispers from the grave are real.

The strangers who never found rest

Among the graves stands a simple stone with the inscription: "In memory of the Skevik people 1746–1788. Here the homeless found rest."

Whether they truly found peace is another matter. The Skevik people were a religious sect who in the 1700s refused church rituals, including burials. Their dead were instead left in forests and on streets, which led to the group being driven out of society. When they were finally granted a common grave at St John's churchyard, it happened under cover of darkness. The gravedigger buried the bodies in secret while their relatives marched through the city streets carrying their dead.

Today it is said that anyone standing by the stone at midnight can hear them whispering beneath the ground.

The girl at the well

One of the most unsettling accounts from the churchyard takes place at the old well, enclosed by a high iron railing.

In 1699 a girl is said to have come here to fetch water late one evening. There she saw a tall, pale figure rise from the ground. Believing it was a friend trying to frighten her, she tore off a piece of its garment. But when she got home she realised her mistake — the scrap of cloth rotted in her hand and a terrible smell of death filled the room.

On the nights that followed she was haunted by the creature, a dark shadow spreading a foul odour. Eventually she returned to the well and buried the piece of cloth in the ground. Shortly afterwards she fell ill and died. Those who saw her before her death said she had changed, growing thin until she herself resembled the walking dead.

A churchyard where shadows linger

St John's churchyard is a place with long memories. Royalty, sect members and the city's poor have all been laid to rest here — or perhaps not.

If you ever pass by as dusk falls and hear steps behind you, it may be one of the restless souls who has not yet found peace. And if you dare put your ear to the nameless stone, you may hear something you will not soon forget.
