A stone castle built for orphans, later a military club with prisoners of war in the basement.

Pythian Castle in Springfield was built in 1913 by the Knights of Pythias in stone and steel as a home for orphaned and sick members. The military took the building over in 1942 as a servicemen's home with a theatre, ballroom and bowling alley, and German and Italian prisoners of war were held and worked here during the Second World War. Public tours have been offered since 2010. Reported hauntings include disembodied voices, shadow figures in the tunnel and the old prisoner cells, drained batteries, and lights switching on and off. The site has featured in several paranormal television programmes.
