The story says Mrs Vaile took her own life after her husband lost his mind. A correction filed in 2004 says that is not what happened.

The Vaile Mansion at Independence, Missouri is a Second Empire pile of 1881, and for a period in its history it was used as an asylum.

The upper part of the house is closed to visitors, and the story attached to it is that Mrs Vaile killed herself with an overdose of morphine after her husband went mad and died.

A correction filed in January 2004 states plainly that this is not what happened, and the correction is the reason this entry is kept as it is. A house museum that circulates a story about the woman who lived in it owes her the accuracy.

There is also a room in the house with carved faces in the woodwork, which is where a good deal of what visitors report happens.

The mansion has thirty one rooms, nine marble fireplaces and painted ceilings, and it is one of the finest surviving Victorian interiors in the state.

It is open to visitors seasonally.
