There is a room in the marble castle of Estremoz that visitors prefer not to linger in. During the civil war between liberals and Miguelites in the 1830s, 39 liberal prisoners were murdered there, and the room is said to have kept a heavy, dark presence ever since. Visitors describe unease, cold draughts and the feeling of someone standing behind them within the old walls.

The castle, with its white marble keep, the Torre das Três Coroas, watches over the plains of the Alentejo and is now one of Portugal's best-known pousadas — you sleep in the rooms above. Queen Isabel of Aragon also died here in 1336, canonised two centuries later, giving the place a second layer: sanctity and bloodshed in the same masonry.
