Nord-Fugløya rises as a lone block of rock nearly seven hundred metres high straight out of the Arctic Ocean, far beyond the Karlsøy archipelago — and the district had an explanation for why that particular island ended up where it lies. In the local history of Karlsøy og Helgøy the island is tied to an old legend of how it was once to be towed further into the fjord, one of the region's creation tales about how the landscape came to be and who really decides such things. The island was left lying where it lies, most exposed of all. For a few generations people lived out here on a narrow shelf facing the sea, living off fowling and fishing with the boat as the only way out. In the twentieth century they gave up; the houses stand empty or have collapsed, and what remains is hundreds of thousands of seabirds, the fog and a roar that never stops.
