Legend says Prillar-Guri sounded her lur from the far side of the valley. Below her, fourteen hundred Scottish mercenaries were buried in the scree.

On 26 August 1612, during the Kalmar War, four to five hundred farmers from Gudbrandsdalen set a trap on the steep slope of Kringen above the Lågen river. Below them marched some 1,400 Scottish mercenaries under Captain George Sinclair, bound for Sweden. Stones and timber were loosed down the hillside and the force was almost entirely destroyed. By local legend the warning reached the farmers from Prillar-Guri, a young woman from Sel said to have shadowed the Scots along the far side of the valley and blown her lur as they entered the ambush. Her story was first printed in 1838 by Hans Peter Schnitler Krag, the minister at Vågå. Today the Prillarguri statue stands in Otta, she appears on Sel's coat of arms – and on the slope at Kringen a monument marks those who never left it.
