The huntsmen carved on this doorway commemorate the beast that devoured children in sixteenth-century Puebla.

The house at 201 Calle 3 Oriente, a stone's throw from Puebla's main square, bears a Gothic stone portal carved with hunting scenes. Legend has it that in the sixteenth century a monster stalked the city — a giant serpent, some said, others an enormous coyote — and one night it slipped into the home of merchant Pedro Carvajal and devoured his young son. The grieving father offered his daughter's hand to whoever slew the beast, and a poor soldier, secretly in love with the girl, finally struck off its head. The doorway is said to have been carved in memory of the deed, and shadows and unexplained sounds are still reported around the old house at night.
