A rape, a revenge killing and a suicide led witchcraft-practicing parents to curse the henequen hacienda forever.

Between the villages of Cholul and Sitpach outside Mérida, an old hacienda from the henequen boom slowly crumbles. The legend tells of a young couple due to marry at the estate; before the wedding the foreman assaulted the bride, and the groom killed him in a rage, later taking his own life under the weight of guilt. His parents, said to practice witchcraft, then laid a curse on the hacienda and all who set foot there. Visitors describe darkness falling earlier than it should, shadows moving through the ruins and the sense of a gaze following every step. The casona is considered Yucatán's most infamous haunted house.
