Every fifth year at the summer solstice, the albino girl Azzurrina is said to weep in the castle vaults.

The medieval fortress of Montebello above Torriana, near Rimini, is the setting of Italy's most famous ghost story. Guendalina, nicknamed Azzurrina for her blue-tinged hair, was the lord's albino daughter who chased a rag ball down toward the ice cellar on 21 June 1375 and was never seen again. Every fifth year, on the night of the solstice, a child's sobbing, light footsteps and the bounce of a ball are said to echo through the vaults. Audio recordings made since the 1990s have turned the castle into a pilgrimage site for ghost hunters, and it is open today as a museum with guided night tours.
