Gjeterøya — an island of shadows

Gjeterøya, also known as Geiterøya, lies in Bamble municipality and is best known for the history of a secret distillery and a large weapons cache uncovered in 1978. But it is not only human secrets that are hidden here — spirits are said to walk the island freely.

Arvid Hagen, who was the tenant farmer on the island, described repeated encounters with the inexplicable. One of the most frightening occurred as he drove down to the sheep barn. Arvid said he hit a man with his car, but when he stopped to help, the man was gone. There were no footprints and no other presence. This was not the only time the man was seen. He is also said to have appeared inside the tenant's house, where he would throw a sack down by the wood stove before suddenly vanishing.

The man, known locally as Aron, is believed to have been someone who in his day ran an inn and a brothel on the island. The story holds that many of the women working there often became pregnant, and that tragically infants were left in the forest to die. Many visitors describe hearing a child crying from various places on the island — a reminder of the fates that marked its past.

Siktesøya — the curse of the death ship at Andedammen

Not far from Gjeterøya lies Siktesøya, another island with a dark history. Here it is the bay known as Andedammen that is said to be haunted. The legend tells of a captain who once became enraged with his crew. As the sailors climbed to set sail, he is said to have shot them one by one. The bodies fell into the water, and according to local people their souls haunt the place still.

Visitors who have ventured to Andedammen describe strange sounds: whispers, steps on deck, and sometimes the sound of splashing water, as though someone were struggling to stay afloat. Some say they have seen blurred figures moving across the bay — perhaps the shadows of sailors who never found peace.
