In 1901 two English academics claimed a garden stroll at Trianon led them straight into Marie-Antoinette's 1789.

The Petit Trianon in the park of Versailles was Marie-Antoinette's private refuge from court etiquette. On 10 August 1901 the English academics Charlotte Moberly and Eleanor Jourdain walked here and later described the surroundings turning dreamlike: figures in 18th-century dress, a pockmarked man with a sinister air, and a sketching lady they identified as the queen herself. Their book on the "Versailles incident" became one of the most debated ghost accounts of its era, and visitors still report the queen's figure in the gardens. The Trianon is part of the Versailles visitor estate.
