Beneath Savoy's turquoise lake a village is said to rest, drowned as punishment for refusing a beggar shelter.

Lake Aiguebelette at the foot of the Chartreuse massif is among France's most beautiful – but legend says its still waters hide a drowned village. The villagers reputedly refused a poor wanderer a roof for the night, whereupon heaven's wrath made the waters rise over houses and farms in a single night. In truly calm weather, some claim to glimpse a church steeple or castle towers in the depths. Reality has fed the legend: archaeologists have found remains of pile-dwelling villages more than five thousand years old in the lake's shallows.
