In the underground passages by the Clain lurked the dragon Grand'Goule, devouring nuns until Saint Radegund drove it out.
Poitiers has its own primeval monster: la Grand'Goule, a winged dragon said to dwell in the flooded cellars and caves by the river Clain, below the abbey of Sainte-Croix. The beast reputedly devoured nuns who ventured into the stores in search of food. In the 6th century the abbey's founder, Saint Radegund, sent a servant armed with the sign of the cross – or holy water, in other tellings – and banished the creature. For centuries a painted effigy of the Grand'Goule was carried in procession through the city, and the carved wooden dragon of 1677 is still displayed in the town museum.
