Thérèse de Saint-Clar was locked in the north tower for fifteen years — at midnight she walks there still.

Château de Puymartin near Sarlat in the Périgord is known as the castle of the White Lady. In the 16th century the lord of the castle caught his wife, Thérèse de Saint-Clar, with a lover; the lover was killed and Thérèse was confined to a small chamber in the north tower until her death — after which, legend says, her body was walled up inside it. Around midnight she is still said to walk the staircase, her room and the ramparts as a white figure. The castle remains in the same family and welcomes visitors, with the tower room and an exhibition on white ladies among the highlights.
