At this medieval fortress in Berry, the armoured ghost of Joan of Arc was reportedly seen for over a century.

The mighty castle of Culan crowns a rock above the river Arnon and hosted Joan of Arc in 1430. From 1817 until well into the 20th century, witnesses told of an armoured figure appearing in the halls and on the ramparts – by tradition the Maid of Orléans herself, returning to one of the last places that received her with honour. The stories grew so famous that Culan long ranked among the most haunted castles of Berry. The region is also classic French witch country, where tales of sorcerers and creatures of the night survived unusually late.
