Locals have long told of voices echoing out of the tunnel mouths at night, and the darkness inside has made La Engaña a favourite destination for hunters of recorded voice phenomena. By the derelict station at Yera, Cantabria's eeriest tunnel mouth gapes toward the valley — almost seven kilometres straight into the mountain, without a single point of light at the far end.
The tunnel was bored from 1942 largely by republican political prisoners under the Franco regime, working in inhuman conditions inside the rock; several lost their lives in collapses and blasting. The Santander–Mediterráneo railway was never completed. The tunnel was finished in 1961 — and abandoned before a single train had passed through it.
