Deep in the pine forests of Sierra Espuña, a tuberculosis sanatorium opened in 1935, receiving lung patients drawn by the mountain air – many never to return. Care ceased in 1962, and since its final closure in 1995 the complex has stood abandoned, its morgue and funeral chapel still intact below. Most talked about is the woman in white said to wander the corridors; in one well-known account from the 1990s, a soldier on a night exercise was so unnerved by a half-transparent figure that he opened fire on it.
