Inside the Untersberg an emperor is said to sleep at a stone table – and on winter nights the Wild Hunt rides out of the mountain's gates.

The Untersberg, straddling the border between Bavaria and Salzburg, is one of the most legend-laden mountains in the Alps. Deep inside, Emperor Charlemagne (in other versions Frederick Barbarossa) is said to sleep at a marble table, waking for the final battle only when his beard has grown three times around it – as long as the ravens still circle the summit. The mountain is also known for its 'Untersbergmandln', dwarves who appear to shepherds, and for tales of people who vanished into its caves and returned after what they thought were hours – only to find that years had passed. During the dark midwinter nights, the Wild Hunt is said to storm out of the mountain's gates.
