Katharina von Orlamünde, said to have killed her two children with a golden needle, walks Franconia's medieval castle as a White Lady.

High above the Loquitz valley in the northern Frankenwald stands Burg Lauenstein, one of the strongholds of Germany's White Lady legend. Katharina von Orlamünde is said to have grown up here before marrying and moving to Plassenburg. When her new suitor Albrecht von Hohenzollern declared that 'four eyes' stood between them and happiness, she took it to mean her two children – and killed them with a golden needle. Ever since, she is said to drift through the castle halls in white robes, condemned never to find peace. The ghost was formally 'imported' to Lauenstein around 1900, but the tale of the child-murdering countess has been told in Franconia since the Middle Ages.
