At Hovegjordet in Gudbrandsdalen people used to sit playing cards, and once the players saw three unknown men walk into a chamber through a door they knew was locked, and there they vanished; the game broke up at once. In Li-stugun the Old One himself joined the play and won throughout, until one bent for a card and saw he had hooked his horse-hoof foot around the table-leg — then they sent for priest Lyng, who forced him out through a bored auger-hole in the window post so it shrieked and whined as he went.
