Diether von Breitbach murdered his daughter's secret lover – hunted by avengers, he plunged from the tower where his spirit is said to linger.

The fairytale castle of Bürresheim in the Eifel came through every war unscathed – but not unhaunted. According to legend, the castle's lord Diether von Breitbach discovered that his daughter secretly loved Georg von Kempenich, and in his fury he killed the young man. The Kempenich family swore revenge and pursued Diether so relentlessly that he finally threw himself from the castle tower. His spirit is said to be bound to the tower ever since, and visitors speak of a dark figure at the windows as dusk falls over the Nette valley. The castle is otherwise best known as a film set – including in Indiana Jones – which makes its dark legend all the more unexpected.
