The manor of Satrupholm in the Angeln region is the setting of one of Schleswig-Holstein's most vivid haunting legends. Its lord is described as a tyrant, ruthless towards servants, tenants and his own wife. After his death, rumbling and clattering began in the house at night: his wicked spirit raged through the rooms, striking and tormenting those asleep. In the end, according to the legend, a 'Geisterbanner' – a ghost-banisher – had to be called in to lay the restless lord to rest. The tale belongs to a whole North German tradition of legends about cruel masters banished into bogs and lakes.
