At the Lévis crossroads, murderess La Corriveau was hung in an iron cage in 1763 — and her ghost is said to still seek a new husband.

Marie-Josephte Corriveau was hanged in 1763, condemned by a British military court for murdering her second husband — and folk imagination soon recast her as a serial poisoner with seven husbands on her conscience. As a warning, her corpse was displayed in an iron cage at the crossroads of Pointe-Lévy, across the river from Québec City, left to rot for weeks before passers-by. The cage became one of the most feared sights in New France, and legend tells that La Corriveau reached her iron claws out at night-time travellers, and that she still prowls the lanes of old Lévis. The actual cage resurfaced in the United States and is now displayed at the Musée de la civilisation in Québec.
