The Gibraltar Point Lighthouse on the Toronto Islands, begun in 1808, is the oldest surviving lighthouse on the Great Lakes — and the setting of Toronto's most enduring ghost story. Over New Year's 1815 the German-born keeper John Paul Radelmüller was murdered, by tradition at the hands of Fort York soldiers who had been drinking his home-brewed beer and killed him in a drunken dispute; two soldiers were charged but acquitted. Legend adds that his body was dismembered and buried near the tower, a tale revived when partial skeletal remains were dug up in the 1890s. Ever since, there have been reports of moans, strange lights and a figure still making his rounds at the lighthouse.
