Coal baron's widow Joan Dunsmuir is said to still sweep down the grand staircase in a ball gown in her Victoria castle.

Craigdarroch Castle is a 39-room Victorian mansion built by Scottish coal baron Robert Dunsmuir, who died before its completion in 1890. His widow Joan lived here until her death, and it is she who is said to linger: visitors report a woman in a ball gown descending the great oak staircase. Piano music is heard through the castle even though no piano exists in the house, and in the basement a childlike apparition has been seen staring at the floor before vanishing. The castle is now a museum, and staff keep collecting new accounts.
