The Caribou Hotel rose during the Klondike gold rush and was run by Bessie and Edwin Gideon until Bessie died in the hotel on October 27, 1933 — eight years to the day after her husband. She is said never to have checked out: a woman's figure stands at a third-floor window, doors slam, floorboards knock, and guests find unexplained bubbles in their bathwater. Bessie is described as a shy but caring spirit who still looks after her hotel. She and the building were honoured with their own stamp in Canada Post's haunted places series.
