Reports of strange events began circulating as early as the 1920s. The vicar of the time, Erik Lindgren, described often feeling watched, and said that something tugged at his clothes while he sat working. He also woke at night to unexplained sounds, as though someone were walking around the house.

But it was his successor, the vicar Nils Hedlund, who truly put Borgvattnet vicarage on the map as a haunted house. He reported that laundry hung out to dry was mysteriously torn down, and that the chair he was sitting on was suddenly thrown backwards without explanation.

The weeping women

One of the most written-about phenomena at the vicarage is that of the weeping women. Many visitors have heard the sound of women crying somewhere in the house. In one of the rooms, three female figures are said to have been seen sitting on a sofa. When someone tried to approach them, they vanished without trace. The heavy grief said to linger in that room is not hard to feel.

A child's footsteps and the rocking chair

Many visitors also describe footsteps that sound like a small child running about. Although the rooms are empty, laughter and running echo through the house. A rocking chair in one of the rooms is particularly known for its movement — it often begins to rock by itself when someone enters. Several guests have tried to sleep in that room, but few make it through the night.

The pink room

The vicarage's most notorious room is the pink room. The energies here are said to be strongest, and many who have spent the night describe sleep paralysis, unpleasant dreams, and figures standing at the foot of the bed staring at them. Several people have woken with the sensation of being smothered, as though an invisible force were trying to frighten them away.

About Borgvattnet

Borgvattnet is a small village in Ragunda municipality, Jämtland county. With just over fifty inhabitants it is one of Sweden's smallest villages, but also one of the most storied. The vicarage was built in 1876 and served as the residence for the parish clergy until the 1970s. It is one of very few vicarages in Sweden to have earned the title of ghost vicarage, which it carries with some pride.
