At Rauhenstein near Baden ruled the knight Wolf, called 'the rough stone' for his stony heart. Two burghers' sons from Baden shot a head of game in his forests and were sentenced to death. Their father, the town's finest bell founder, offered a ransom and was thrown into the tower himself. As the price for sparing one son, the knight demanded that the old man cast a bell to be rung for the first time when the other son was executed. The bell was hung in the tower. When it was to be rung the old man lost his reason, ran up the spiral stair and hauled on the rope without pause while cursing his own work. Lightning struck and killed him, and the castle burned. Ever since, the death bell tolls of its own accord before every misfortune that strikes Rauhenstein.
