A little grey man moves along the wall at dusk. The castle spirit seeks gold grains and a shining stone inside the hill below.

When Liechtenstein Castle above Maria Enzersdorf was still called the Enzersdorf stronghold, Lord von Arenstein lived there as a childless widower. One evening he sat at the window watching the sun go down when he noticed a small grey man moving busily about below the wall. He watched a long while without grasping what it was doing, and when he rose to open the window it was gone. At that moment the castle fool Lipps came in, himself of dwarfish build, and calmly explained what his master had seen: it was the castle spirit, who keeps house inside the hill beneath the stronghold. They say he searches for grains of gold and a shining stone — but what he wants with them no wise man knows, still less a fool. The hill below the castle is still called the Hausberg.
