The Wiccademous grave

The grave lies at the end of a narrow path across from Fernandina Beach High School in Florida. Walk straight along it to a large oak tree, and according to the tradition the ground shakes and a booming noise follows, which is understood as her telling visitors to leave her grave and let her rest.

The story attached is that a teenage girl was accused of witchcraft, questioned, disbelieved by the townspeople, and hanged on 12 September at some point in the 1600s.

That did not happen. Florida in the 1600s was Spanish territory, and the witch trials of colonial America were an English phenomenon in New England. Fernandina as a town did not exist. No hanging for witchcraft is recorded anywhere in Florida.

We keep the entry with the correction attached because the site is genuinely visited, and because school folklore this specific about a date deserves to be checked rather than repeated.

What is real is the path, the oak, and the fact that a great many Fernandina teenagers have walked out there after dark to find out.
