Whitehaven at Paducah, Kentucky is a restored antebellum mansion that now serves an unusual second life: it is a highway rest area, open to the public and staffed with guides.

A female figure has occasionally been seen on the balcony off the second floor bedroom, and she is understood to be the wife of the man who owned the house.

Local account holds that she bled to death during an appendectomy, which in the period before proper surgical technique was a very ordinary way to die.
